Charmouth Beach from just below the house
THE BEACH AND COASTLINE.
The house is located only 100 yards from the beach on a quiet back street in the charming village of Charmouth. It offers commanding views of the coastal hills and Golden Cap the highest point on the south coast of England. Charmouth beach is famous worldwide for its wonderful fossils and every year sees visitors from all over the world looking for new specimens. The beach is NOT a sandy beach but one of pebbles and small boulders. It is a wonderful beach for walking and beachcombing not for sunning and sand.
The Dorset coastal pathway one of the best hiking trails in England runs directly through the village with an entrance point only 30 yards from the house. This hiking path runs along the tops of the hills in both directions out of Charmouth and offers wonderful hiking and majestic scenery.
There are very few areas in Dorset where you can stay very close to a beach. The hotels in Weymouth offer a sandy beach if that is all you want. In most of the area however the shore is accessible but does not have villages or much in the way of houses at all. Charmouth is very unique in this way. The only other area near the coast is Lulworth. However Lulworth is located on the edge of the army ranges, the major tank proving ground in Europe. Tank exercises are not quiet, when they have firing practice you can here it 10 miles away and night exercises can seriously disrupt your sleep.
CHARMOUTH VILLAGE.
Charmouth is a charming, large (by English standards) village which offers all the amenities that you would need. Several pubs and restaurants offer good food and drink. There are also tearooms offering English cream teas and several small shops to buy all necessities of life. The village is a short 10 minute walk uphill from the house. It is highly recommended that you walk into the village (everyone does) as parking is limited and the roads are narrow.
Charmouth village is located between Lyme Regis (3 miles) and Bridport (7 miles).
Bridport is as the name suggests a small port town and the major shopping area in the region. Be aware that it is a small coastal town in the South of England so it contains small shops and grocery stores. You can obtain everything you want there but it is small by American standards. There is a large supermarket located on the outskirts of Bridport.
Lyme Regis is a wonderful picturesque hill town which has been famous from Victorian times as a holiday (vacation) spot. It has been the setting for several movies including the French Lieutenant's Woman. Its cobb (large stone pier like structure) is very distinctive and once seen can be spotted in any movie or show. The village is built up and down the hillside right on the shore and commands wonderful views. The town contains many interesting shops, pubs and restaurants.
There are a number of small shops in the village that can supply all the immediate needs of self catering and any other such items that you need. For a larger food shop the closest large supermarket is located on the main road just outside Bridport (West side or the nearest side of Bridport to the house).
